FLORA AND FAUNA

Can we imagine a World without wildlife?

Conservation of biodiversity has become a challenge today; biological diversity is dying out at a rapid rate. The planet has lost 60% of the species since 1970, currently the highest extinction figure. In the history of the Earth 5 mass extinctions have been documented and anthropogenic pressures are leading us to the sixth mass extinction. Given this concern for conservation, Cooperativa Salamá cares for, protects and conserves fragments of forests within its farms.

One of the most important strategies to conserve wildlife wealth within and outside of national protected areas is to maintain, protect and improve conservation areas within agroecosystems. In the farms a total of 237 species of flora belonging to 74 families have been registered. Among the flora species are: Carica papaya, Castilla elastica, Albizia adinocephala, Cordia alliodora, Inga oerstediana, Zamia standleyi, Merremia umbellata, Lantana cámara, Asclepia curassavica, among others.

In the Salama Cooperative farms, a total of 171 species of macrofauna have been registered, distributed in 76 families. Among which has been registered; Leopardus pardalis (ocelot), Cougasr yagouaroundi (wild cat), Cuniculus paca (tepezcuintle), Dasyprocta punctata, Pecari tajacu, Mephitis macroura (skunk), Lontra longicaudis (otter), Nasua narica, Agalychnis callidryas (frog with red eyes), Rhinophrynus dorsalis, Bothrops asper, Micrurus nigrocinctus, Ramphastos sulfuratus, Platalea ajaja, Falco rufigularis (hawk), among others.

Within fauna monitoring, a species of anuran Rhinophrynus dorsalis was recorded, this is not officially distributed for the Colón area. Therefore, we consider it very important to continue monitoring and publish data such as these to fill these information gaps as a valuable contribution in the world of research.
